The original plan was, to sail to Vieux Fort, the first harbour in the south of St. Lucia. But as so often, the wind was against us. And after a while as the shadows grew longer, we decided to change course to Soufriere. Beneath the majestic Pitons, the landmarks of St. Lucia, we found the moorings of the Soufriere marine park. Very convenient and pricewise comparable to our other Caribbean experiences, 2 days for 15US$ or 20US$ for a week. The parkrangers are coming by dayly and give you a receit. There is hardly any chance to avoid the boatboys, who try to help you with the ropes as well as the vendors selling fruit and vegetables. |

It was a pleasant surprise to find out that Soufriere is also a Port of Entry. No guide mentioned that. You can clear Customs at the office of the Marine Park and Immigration is only a few doors away at the Police Station.
Everything very relaxed and easy going. |

For us the most fascinating topic was nature. The rainforest with its green in different colours and all the blushing flowers. And in between spices like ginger, or coffee and my faivorite tree: nutmeg. Today St. Lucia is counting on tourism. Many of the old plantations are abandoned or functioning as museums. Sorrowly this trend will continue because the original cultivation of farmproducts is uncompetitive. |
